The College of Western Idaho welcomed its first students Jan. 14.

The community college, in conjunction with Boise State's Selland College of Applied Technology Center for Workforce training, will offer multiple classes for individuals in the Treasure Valley area. The college is located in Nampa.

Currently classes are broken into short-term, non-credit categories on business and computer technologies, health and wellness, landscaping, manufacturing, networking, real estate and trades.

"On behalf of the faculty, staff, and the Board of Trustees, I welcome the world and open the doors to the College of Western Idaho. Idaho's newest community college located in the Treasure Valley," College of Western Idaho Interim President Dennis Griffin said. "Treasure Valley residents and all Idahoans should be excited by this momentum and how it will shape the future of our institution."

CWI will offer classes and training for the workforce to students who have finished high school and are 16 or older.

The next stages planned for the college will be adding courses on teaching English as a second language, obtaining a GED, two year associate/professional for credit degree and general education for four year degree.

"We have begun branding and working in partnership with the Selland college - and to first of all start with those center of work force training courses," Public Information Officer Shirl Boyce Jr. said. "The intention is then the time frame of January of 2009 to begin teaching the general education classes.

"Then in the fall of 2009 it is anticipated that the Selland College will all be transferred to the College of Western Idaho. Then the for-credit courses and professional technical training will start off at the College of Western Idaho. That's the intended time frame."

Classes on basic emergency medical training, welding, blueprint reading, traffic officiating, computer applications, discovering eBay, five ways to greater profits, steps to successful business planning and others are now available for registration.

"Registration is easy - no forms, no applications to fill out … regardless of educational experience. Classes are held in a variety of locations throughout southwest Idaho. Instructors are caring professionals with years of experience in the topics they teach," Griffin said.

"Those work force training, short term, non-credit courses are really critical because there are companies that need to retrain their employees. Companies considering coming to the area or need to expand will go to that particular part of the college for training and updating their skills of their employees," Boyle said. "Companies may even decide to or not to come to the area if that infrastructure is not available. So this a great advancement for the area."

According to Boyle, Idaho has not had a new college in almost 45 years.
