The shooter that killed five Northern Illinois University students yesterday has been identified as 27-year old Stephen P. Kazmierczak. Kazmierczak attended the university in Spring 2007 as a graduate student, and was enrolled this semester at the University of Illinois: Urbana-Champaign.

In a press conference Friday, NIU Police Chief Donald Grady said that Kazmierczak was on medication that he had recently stopped taking. The university did not comment on which medication the shooter was taking, or for what condition he was receiving treatment.

Eighteen students were killed or injured in the shooting that occurred the just after 3:00 p.m. Thursday. Kazmierczak carried a shotgun onto the campus in a guitar case, as well three handguns. Only two of the weapons were registered to Kazmierczak.

The shooting occurred in a large lecture classroom in Cole Hall, an academic building on the NIU campus.

NIU also released the names of the five victims, all of whom were current students at the university:

Daniel Parmenter, age 20, Westchester, Ill.

Catalina Garcia, age 20, Cicero, Ill.

Ryanne Mace, age 19, Carpentersville, Ill.

Julianna Gehant, age 32, Mendota, Ill.

Gayle Dubowski, age 20, Carol Stream, Ill.
