Off the western coast of Africa lay the 10 small islands that make up Cape Verde, Africa. Rhett Scarbrough, a Boise State and Construction Management Program alumnus, is teaching a construction class at the Cape Verede School on behalf of the United States Peace Corps.

Students of The Cape Verde Program of Civil Construction learn about the materials and methods of construction. This class emphasizes hands-on experience for the students, but because the school is undersupplied, it has been nearly impossible.

Scarbrough called upon his friends and former peers from the CMA at BSU. Members of the club and many community organizations have contributed to help this cause.

Jennifer Lanzetti, CMA secretary, and Michael Sis, CMA alumnus, are leading the humanitarian project to collect tools. Lanzetti accepted this project because she believes in volunteer work and the blessings that come from others' generosity.

"To help out a community is a good thing. Something our country gets away from too often," Lanzetti said. "Participating not only inspirers individuals to help others, but it also offers great professional experience and brightens up a resume, which is something the construction and engineering industries like to see."

They are striving to be engineers, architects and apprentices in other trades.

"These tools are going to be helping students like myself be able to build safer, stronger buildings. It's the perfect gift. We have the resources and they need the help," Lanzetti said.

Donors who have already contributed to the cause include Concrete Construction Supply, Idaho Women's Charitable Foundation, Marcon Construction, Top Concrete and Wright Brothers. The CMA still needs auto level and surveying equipment to assist in the students. Due to the extreme shipping costs, monetary donations are being graciously accepted.

"We're reaching across the globe to help a community. It's not about recognition, it's about paying it forward," Lanzetti said.

For more information about donating or any other questions contact Jennifer Lanzetti at jennifer.lanzetti@gmail.com or 447-0953.

What a great thing you are doing for the people of Cape Verde. As an American of Cape Veardean descent I just wanted to say thanks. Also, wanted to let you know that the New England area consists of more Cape Veardeans than the entire population of the islands and how could I place this article in the media here so we can at least recongize your group for the efforts.
